Brief: The house is typical of the mid 90’s, a standardized design trying to gain mass appeal. The Client envisioned a home that better aligned with their goal of living here forever; a place to entertain large family gatherings, gather with friends in the summer, relax together after a long workday, and give more space to the mundane like laundry and storage.
Design began by exploring 3 schemes: a reconfiguration, a maximum, and an economical. Each explored layouts, new program, and configurations at different scales to help the Client make the best decision for a design path forward. The final solution used aspects from all 3 options; a mudroom to offer a place to sit, take off shoes, and wipe off muddy dogs. A larger laundry room that also doubles as additional storage. A larger kitchen that offers both functionality and entertainment. A wet bar that book ends the dining and kitchen. The removal of a load bearing wall allows high traffic areas and service spaces to be grouped together and create better overall connectivity.
Though the addition might seem minor, the thoughtfulness in program allowed each space to be better defined and the overall floorplan to function better for the Client’s future.
